~ about Loch
Loch Caolisport is a
small, remote sea loch situated near the west head of the Mull of
Kintyre (at some points overlooking the Isle of Jura) where I’ve spent many holidays on the beautiful Ellary
Chapel Bay - From the
anchorage you can just about see the very ruined 13th century St Columba's chapel submerged in the bracken just
across the small road running along the shore line. Apart from the slab at the east end (presumed to cover a
grave) the interior is so overgrown that you can't see anything else. Just behind the
chapel are a couple of caves, the
larger with an altar of some sort and a cross carved in the wall above it. Maybe St Columba himself hid in
this cave, who knows.
Kennels Cottage overlooks a small pebbly
cove where I’ve found many Mermaid’s tears (another name for seaglass) and is one of the
loveliest places I’ve ever visited.
